Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery Specialist

Dr. John Welling is a fellowship-trained corneal surgeon specializing in medical and surgical treatment of the eye, including cataract surgery, keratoconus, corneal cross linking, corneal transplants (penetrating keratoplasty, DSEK, DALK), laser vision correction (PRK and LASIK), pterygium surgery, ocular surface tumors, corneal dystrophies, and infection-related eye disease. He is also available for general ophthalmology, diabetic exams, uveitis, and routine eye care.

Dr. Welling restoring vision in African CommunitiesDr. Welling teaches courses on cataract surgery at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has also served as international faculty for courses on advanced corneal transplant techniques in Nepal and Ethiopia. He is a co-founder of YO2GO, an organization linking young U.S. ophthalmologists with opportunities for teaching, training, and medical service in underserved parts of the world. He is the author of a number of peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and presentations at national and international conferences.

After completing his cornea fellowship at Emory University, Dr. Welling and his family spent one year in Africa and Southeast Asia. As a Himalayan Cataract Project / Moran Eye Center International Fellow, Dr. Welling worked with local ophthalmologists, teaching cataract and cornea surgery, and performing sight-restoring cataract surgery in under-resourced settings. Dr. Welling remains actively involved with the Himalayan Cataract Project’s work in Africa and Asia.

Dr. Welling enjoys exploring the incredible beauty of the Pacific Northwest with his wife and children. He loves fishing, camping, photography, woodworking, and running.
